Other Career Opportunities

1. Senior Project Pilot Program

WCHS will be piloting the senior project next year with the class of 2007.
The projects planned and carried out during the senior year of high school as the culmination of the secondary school experience.Senior projects require higher-level thinking skills, problem-solving, and creative thinking. They are often interdisciplinary and may require extensive re-search. Projects culminate in a presentation of the project to a panel of people, usually faculty and community mentors, sometimes students, who evaluate the student?s work at the end of the year.

2. Internship/Mentorship Program

Students work directly with a person in their chosen professions for a specified period of time to learn more about a particular industry or occupation.  These program may or may not include compensation.

3.  Apprenticeship Program

This is a federally approved program during which the worker or apprentice learns an occupation in a structured program.  These programs typically involve technical trades such as electrician, plumber, and construction jobs.

4. Articulation Agreements

Students may earn technical school or college credit at a negligible cost by taking approved high school courses that have been articulated with participating technical schools.  Classes currently articulated through Southeast Tech include mathematics, computer and horticulture.

5. Construction Trades Academy

The Associated General Contractors of South Dakota's building chapter is one of the many organizations and businesses that has partnered with East Dakota Educational Cooperative and Southeast Technical Institute to host the Academy for Construction Trades. The Academy was developed in hopes that students will be drawn to the construction industry at an earlier age and it will cultivate an interest in careers in construction.  The academy provides three weeks of hands-on construction-skill training for high school students interested in pursuing a career in construction. During the three week program, the students construct two houselike sheds complete with shingles, roof overhangs, floor joists and wood floors. Electricians, plumbers, home inspectors and other industry professionals give the students an inside look at what their career is about. Unlike classes students are familiar with, the academy is mostly hands-on.
